In a dramatic turn of events during Afghanistan‘s final Super 8 game of the T20 World Cup 2024, captain Rashid Khan was visibly furious with his teammate Karim Janat. The incident occurred during the final over of Afghanistan’s innings when they were struggling to post a competitive total against Bangladesh.
Rashid Khan’s frustration boils over in Afghanistan’s final Super 8 game
Afghanistan, having elected to bat first after winning the toss, were hoping to finish their innings on a high note. In the final over, Rashid played a helicopter shot that he hoped would clear the boundary, but it fell short. Rashid quickly completed the first run and was keen to come back for a second to maximize the score. However, Karim, who had reached the striker’s end, turned down the opportunity for a second run.
Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah Riyad, who was closest to the ball, fumbled initially, allowing Shakib Al Hasan to retrieve it and throw towards the non-striker’s end. Rashid had already crossed halfway down the pitch when Janat sent him back, resulting in a furious reaction from the captain. Rashid, in his frustration, threw his bat towards Janat, an action caught on television cameras. Although no players were injured, Rashid’s outburst could lead to disciplinary action from the ICC.

Afghanistan’s innings
Afghanistan had a promising start with a 50-run opening stand, but Bangladesh staged a remarkable comeback. The team struggled to accelerate and finished with a below-par total of 115/5 in their allotted 20 overs. The failure to build on the initial partnership and capitalize in the death overs was evident.
Bangladesh fails to chase and Australia’s elimination
In response, Bangladesh’s Liton Das played a spectacular innings. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Das anchored the innings and made his team in the contest till the end in a low-scoring thriller. Nevertheless, Afghanistan held their nerves and ultimately won the contest by eight runs.
With Bangladesh’s failure to achieve the target, Australia could not secure their spot in the semi-finals. Instead, Afghanistan qualified as the fourth and final team to advance. The other semi-finalists are India, South Africa and England.
