Virat Kohli overtakes Sachin Tendulkar to become India’s leading run-scorer In ICC white-ball tournaments

 

In a thrilling encounter during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup between India and Australia at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, Virat Kohli etched his name in the annals of cricket history. The Indian skipper achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar‘s record for the highest runs scored by an Indian in ICC white-ball tournaments.

Kohli’s record-breaking innings

As India faced a daunting run chase, Kohli remained determined to lead his team to victory following a challenging start to their World Cup campaign. Throughout his innings, Kohli not only displayed his masterful batting skills but also overtook Tendulkar’s long-standing record in ICC tournaments.

Tendulkar, often hailed as the GOAT, had amassed a total of 2719 runs in 58 innings in ICC white-ball tournaments for India. Kohli’s remarkable feat came in just 64 innings, underlining his consistency and prowess as a run-scorer on the global stage. Besides Tendulkar and Kohli, the current Indian captain Rohit Sharma is the only other player to breach the 2000-run mark in ICC tournaments while representing Team India.

Kohli-Rahul lead India fightback

Please note that this list exclusively covers white-ball ICC tournaments, excluding the ICC World Test Championship. The total includes runs scored in the ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC T20 World Cup, and the Champions Trophy (ICC Knockout Trophy). Tendulkar showcased his prowess in six ODI World Cups and five Champions Trophies, whereas Kohli, with his fourth ODI World Cup appearance, has also participated in five T20 World Cups and three Champions Trophies.

Meanwhile in the game against the Aussies, Kohli and KL Rahul led India’s fightback with inspirational partnership. After 31 overs, the Men in Blue had reached 124 with Kohli (62 no) and Rahul (56 no) smashing their respective fifties. The duo has so far added 122 runs for the fourth wicket.
