With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup just over a month away, a potential storm brewing in Indian cricket seems to have settled. According to a report by Dainik Jagran, star batter Virat Kohli may open the innings alongside skipper Rohit Sharma at the marquee tournament.
A Change of Plans?
Earlier, Kohli’s inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad and his batting position were under scrutiny. However, a meeting held last week in Mumbai between Rohit, head coach Rahul Dravid, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar appears to have changed the course. Reports suggest that the team management is keen on having Kohli bat at the top alongside Rohit.
Kohli’s Return and Form
Kohli made his comeback in the shortest format during the Afghanistan series, marking his first appearance in nearly two years. While his preferred position is number 3, the team management seems to be prioritizing current form and adaptability for the World Cup.

A Look at Kohli’s Credentials
The report claims Kohli himself sought clarity from the selectors regarding his role in the World Cup. Interestingly, his recent exploits in IPL 2024 seem to be making a strong case for him. Leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)‘s batting charge, Kohli currently holds the Orange Cap with 361 runs in just seven matches at a phenomenal strike rate of 147, including a century.
Opening Act: A Repeat Performance?
This wouldn’t be Kohli’s first stint as an opener for India. He began his international career in ODIs as an opener against Sri Lanka in 2008, eventually transitioning to the number 3 spot. However, his T20 record as an opener is commendable – he boasts a healthy average of 57 with 400 runs and a significantly higher strike rate of 161 compared to his overall T20I strike rate.
Musical Chairs at the Top Order
This potential move by the selectors could mean that the likes of young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal might have to make way. While Shubman Gill‘s IPL performances cannot go unnoticed, Jaiswal’s left-handedness could be a factor that tilts the scales in his favour.
A Crucial Decision
With the T20 World Cup approaching, the decision to potentially open India’s innings with Kohli is a significant one. His experience and recent form are undeniable assets, but whether he can seamlessly transition back to the opening role in a high-pressure tournament remains to be seen.
