Former Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has possibly explained the reason behind Umran Malik’s struggle with the ball in recent times. The highly-rated pacer from Kashmir has struggled to do well with the ball in recent months.
After making his debut in 2021 and playing 3 games in his debut season, Umran Malik enjoyed a stunning campaign in the IPL in 2022 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He impressed one and all with his extreme pace and picked up 22 wickets in 14 games. The impressive displays in IPL helped him earn his maiden India call-up and he went on to make his T20I and ODI debuts last year.
However, the 24-year-old failed to live up to the expectations in IPL 2023. He not only failed to do well with the ball but also struggled to cement his spot in the playing eleven. In 8 games, he managed to pick up just 5 wickets while having an economy rate of almost 11. The right-arm pacer has also not played a T20I since February while his last ODI appearance came in July.

As Umran Malik tries hard to get back into the Indian team and perform well in the next season of the IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s spin bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan has possibly explained the reason behind his struggle. Speaking on the TRS podcast, the legendary spinner said that a pacer, who has the ability to bowl consistently at over 150kph, also needs to have variations in his armory to excel.
“Bowling 150 (kmph) is not cricket. Cricket is beyond that. You have to learn how to bowl a slow ball, you have to know how to bowl a cutter, knuckle ball. You have to know how to bowl a yorker, slow yorker. You have to have variations,” said Muttiah Muralitharan.
“So you got one aspect – pace. So where is that other armories, then only you are a complete bowler,” he added.
Bowling 150 KMPH is not a Cricket
