IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma Admits Being Nervous After Awful Start vs Australia, Credits KL Rahul, Virat Kohli For Win

The Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team defeated the Pat Cummins-led Australia National Cricket Team in the 5th Match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Sunday, October 8.

India were invited to bowl first in the match and the spinners as well as pacers delivered brilliant performances to bowl out the Aussies for a modest total of 199 runs.

Steven Smith (46) and David Warner (41) emerged as the top performers for Australia and they played really well on the tricky surface against India.

For India, the spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravichandran Ashwin shared 6 wickets between them while the rest of the four wickets were picked up by pace bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Hardik Pandya.

During the run-chase, it was a batting horror show from the Indian top order. Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer bagged ducks and it was the first time in men’s ODI history that three of India’s top-four batters were dismissed for 0.

However, chase-master Virat Kohli joined forces with in-form KL Rahul, and together they bailed India out of trouble. In the end, Virat Kohli (85) got out, but KL Rahul (97) remained unbeaten and guided his team to a 6-wicket win.

Good feeling to come out on top – Rohit Sharma

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit Sharma expressed satisfaction over the victory of India. He also lauded his bowlers for doing a brilliant job in the match. Rohit Sharma said:

“Pretty exciting. Good feeling to come out on top. It was a good game to start the tournament for us. I thought it was magnificent, especially the fielding and we saw the effort from everyone today, conditions like this it would be tough.

“Our bowlers used the conditions perfectly and we knew there would be assistance for everyone, even the seamers got some reverse, the spinners bowled in the nice areas and all in all it was a great effort.”

Rohit Sharma admitted that he got nervous after India were off to a horrible start in the match and credited KL Rahul and Virat Kohli for the win. He elaborated:

“I was (nervous), you don’t want to start your innings like that, credit to the Aussies bowlers as they bowled in good areas but some loose shots as well, when you have that kind of target you want to score as much as possible in the powerplay, but credit to Virat and KL on how they went about the chase. That is going to be the challenge for us as a team, moving to different conditions and adapting, whoever suits the conditions will have to come and do the job.

“Chennai never disappoints, they love their cricket and for them to sit in that heat and come out and cheer for the team says a lot,” Rohit Sharma said.
