India locked horns with Afghanistan in the 9th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Wednesday. The Afghan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and elected to bat first.
Afghanistan Innings: 272/8 (50 Overs)
Afghanistan’s opening batsmen, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, started steadily, posting 43 runs before the first wicket fell. However, the middle order took charge as Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai put up a spectacular partnership. Shahidi was the standout performer, scoring 80 runs, while Omarzai added 62 runs to the total. The Afghan innings also featured valuable contributions from other batsmen, and they finished at 272/8 in their allotted 50 overs.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers, taking four crucial wickets, while Hardik Pandya chipped in with two wickets.
India Innings: 273/2 (35 Overs)
Chasing a target of 273, the Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, provided a flying start to the innings. Captain Rohit’s explosive performance was the highlight of the chase, as he smashed 131 runs off just 84 balls, including 16 fours and 5 sixes. Kishan contributed with 47 runs, while Virat Kohli (55 not out) and Shreyas Iyer (25 not out) played important supporting roles.
India comfortably reached the target, scoring 273/2 in just 35 overs.
Bowling figures for Afghanistan featured Rashid Khan, who was the most successful bowler with 2 wickets, while the rest of the Afghan bowlers struggled to make significant breakthroughs.

India’s powerful batting lineup dominated the Afghan bowlers, ensuring a convincing 8-wicket victory.
