On Sunday, October 8, the International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a statement, informing that the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate in match 4 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
The fourth match of the World Cup 2023 saw the battle between Temba Bavuma-led South Africa National Cricket Team and Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday, October 7.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first in the match. The decision proved to be an awful one for the side as the Proteas batters annihilated the Lankan bowling unit.
South Africa posted a huge score of 428/5 on the board, thanks to the sensational innings of Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram. Several records were broken during South Africa’s historic innings against Sri Lanka.
The Proteas won the game in a dominant fashion by 102 runs to open their campaign on a high as they bowled out Sri Lanka for 326 runs.
Sri Lanka Fined 10% Match Fee For Maintaining Slow Over-Rate
After suffering the defeat, Sri Lanka have been handed yet another blow as they have been fined 10 percent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against South Africa.
Notably, the Lankan Lions were ruled to be 2 overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.
“Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Dasun Shanaka’s side was ruled to be 2 over(s) short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.
“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 5 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” ICC said in an official media release.
“Dasun Shanaka pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Shahid Saikat, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Alex Wharf leveled the charge.”
Sri Lanka National Cricket Team will face the Pakistan National Cricket Team in their second match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Tuesday, October 10 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
