ICC World Cup Points Table 2023: Updated Standings, Most Runs, Most Wickets After IND vs AUS Match 5: The Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team and Pat Cummins-led Australia National Cricket Team locked horns in the 5th Match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Sunday, October 8.
Australia won the toss and decided to have a go with bat first. They were off to a poor start as the explosive opening batsman Mitchell Marsh was back in the hut for a duck.
After the early setback, David Warner stitched together 69 runs in 85 balls with Steve Smith to bring some momentum towards the Aussies. However, Kuldeep Yadav broke the partnership between the star batting duo by dismissing David Warner and then Smith was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja.
After losing Smith and Warner, Australia were sent on the back foot and they lost wickets at regular intervals to eventually get bundled out for 199 in 49.3 overs.
For India, Ravindra Jadeja was the top wicket-taker as he picked up three wickets. Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav got two wickets each while Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya, and Ravichandran Ashwin got one wicket each.
Chasing the target, India were off to an awful start and it was so horrible that Indian fans were reminded of the 2019 World Cup semi-final clash against New Zealand.
Mitchell Starc cleaned up Ishan Kishan for a duck in the first over and Josh Hazlewood dismissed Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer for 0 in the second over to leave India tottering at 2/3.
Virat Kohli and KL Rahul had a big responsibility on their shoulders to build a good partnership and put the pressure back on Australia. The duo exactly did that and showcased sheer class.
Virat Kohli got a reprieve early on in the innings and after that, he looked class apart while KL Rahul looked exceptional with the bat from the very beginning.
The duo added 165 runs in 215 balls before Josh Hazlewood dismissed Virat Kohli, who had to go back to the pavilion after scoring, outstanding 85 runs off 116 balls. KL Rahul, however, remained unbeaten and smashed a sensational 97 runs and led India to a 6-wicket win alongside Hardik Pandya in 41.2 overs.
